Hans Niemann beats Magnus & Hikaru

American Grandmaster Hans Niemann delivered an outstanding performance in Chess.com’s Titled Tuesday rapid tournaments, held on June 10–11, 2025. Niemann clinched victory in the early event with a near-perfect 10.5/11, narrowly topping the field that included Magnus Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura.

In the head-to-head 10th round of that early tournament, Niemann defeated Carlsen, and round 11 saw him triumph over Nakamura—securing key wins against two of chess’s most high-profile figures. Shortly afterward, in the separate late tournament, Carlsen regained momentum and ultimately took first place with 10/11, while Niemann also finished in the upper ranks.

Niemann’s robust performance underlines his position as a rising force in online blitz and rapid formats. Just 22 years old (born June 20, 2003), he earned the Grandmaster title in 2021 and reached a peak classical FIDE rating of 2736 this April.

His success in Titled Tuesday adds significant momentum to his competitive resume, particularly given the high calibre of his opposition.

As online formats gain prominence, Niemann’s ability to consistently challenge—and at times beat—the very best positions him as a player to watch closely in future elite rapid and blitz competitions.
