A London Chess Phenomenon
On the South Bank, Greenwich Peninsula Chess Club offers two weekly fixtures catering to different moods. On Saturdays at 2 pm, players gather outdoors at the “Seafood Disco” table near the Jetty (Olympic Way, SE10 0UP), raising boards into the sunshine.
On Sundays from 12 pm to 5 pm, they convene indoors at The Old Brewery within the Royal Naval College grounds (SE10 9LW).
Founded in 2021 by Nick Templar and Andrew Pavord, the club emphasises over‑the‑board play, fostering understanding through hands‑on interaction. Most gatherings are free, though some rapid tournaments involve small registration fees. (as is the norm for any rated tournament).
The club also promotes ECF and FIDE-rated events, including a 20+10 rapid tournament in Woolwich and ongoing ECF conversions.
Players from all backgrounds enjoy the club’s relaxed atmosphere. Whether it's sunny sidewalk sessions or cozy café tables, there's a palpable sense of community: a chance to meet fellow chess lovers off-screen and dive into strategy, one friendly match at a time.
